![]() Even though Carson led the NFL’s best rushing attack with 1,151 yards and nine touchdowns last season, the 2017 seventh-round pick will always be looking over his shoulder. Seattle selected Penny in the first round in 2018 with the expectation he would become its lead back. Will running back Rashaad Penny challenge Chris Carson? Tiuli, a native of Federal Way, comes from the FCS ranks so his college stats come with a bit of an asterisk, but he did have a more productive career than the other two rookie DTs on the roster (sixth-round pick Demarcus Christmas and undrafted free agent Bryan Mone). Even with the addition of veteran defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, Jarran Reed’s six-game suspension makes this position as wide open as any. I’ve written in the past about Eastern Washington defensive tackle Jay-Tee Tiuli, who appeared to be higher up on the depth chart than typical undrafted rookies during OTAs, in part because of all the injuries on the defensive line. Is there an undrafted rookie sleeper on the roster? He flashed some serious receiving skills during OTAs and could be a threat to make the roster. The wild card is Jacob Hollister, who spent two seasons in New England before landing in Seattle during the offseason. Doing so, however, would be unwise if Dissly isn’t fully ready. Seattle would save roughly $6.4 million over the next two years by releasing Dickson. He is the most accomplished of the group but could also be expendable if Dissly and veteran backup Nick Vannett prove more than capable of carrying the load. Veteran Ed Dickson, who returned to action a couple of weeks after Dissly went down, is a deft blocker with acceptable receiving skills. Will Dissly, who got off to a strong start to his rookie season before going down with a torn patellar tendon in Week 4, is expected back, but will he be ready to take the reins for good? ![]() This group is as much of a head-scratcher as any on the roster. Griffin was an excellent pass-rusher in college and his shortest path to the starting rotation is to bring those same pass-rush skills to the pro level. ![]() Mingo’s contract makes his roster status uncertain and Kendricks may be a better fit playing behind the line of scrimmage. If Jacob Martin is moving to defensive end - his listed position on the updated roster - Griffin’s competition will be Barkevious Mingo and possibly Kendricks. That leaves the strongside linebacker role for the second-year pro. Backup reps at WLB will be hard to come by, too, as long as Mychal Kendricks and rookie Ben Burr-Kirven are healthy. The middle and weakside linebacker positions are taken by Pro Bowl talents, so Griffin is out of luck there, barring injury. (And don’t worry, at the end of the preseason, we’ll check back on these and see if we like the answers the Seahawks gave us - or not.) 10. Theirs was an astonishing performance of an astonishing piece.Seattle opens training camp with its first public practice on Thursday, and as soon as players hit the fields at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, we’re going to start getting to the bottom of things.Īs camp gets underway, our Michael-Shawn Dugar (defense) and Aaron Fentress (offense) pose 10 questions they want answered by the time Week 1 rolls around. John and Lee plucked, strummed, sawed, yanked and smacked their respective strings, stopping just short of rubbing their instruments together to start a fire. ![]() This is a jaw-droppingly difficult piece to play, and for those who write off Ravel as a lightweight, the volatile second and fourth movements should stand as a corrective. John and Lee attacked Ravel's angular, often atonal Sonata for Violin and Cello as if possessed. When his music is played with the breathless enthusiasm the Marlboro musicians brought to it, you have to wonder why Novak hasn't found his way into the standard rep. Vitezslav Novak's manically tuneful C Minor Piano Quartet apes everyone from Brahms to Humperdinck to Dvorak, and springs an off-kilter surprise a minute. Solo passages set the group's individual timbres in vivid relief - the violin sweet but punchy, the viola mellow, the cello sinewy, the piano swaggering and boldly projected - and the ensemble playing tapped all the wit, schmaltz and heartache Dvorak loaded into the score. This is lovable Dvorak, bursting with melody and flirting with everything from cafe music to Czech folk song to Middle Eastern harmony. John, violist Amadi Hummings, cellist Nina Maria Lee and pianist Reiko Uchida made a fine meal of Dvorak's E-flat Piano Quartet. The Freer Gallery's "Musicians From Marlboro" program on Tuesday evening proved as fresh in its choice of repertoire as in the hell-for-leather playing of its young, instrumental quartet.
